The Challenges Register Now Prizes

Super Heroes vs Master Hackers is a 36-hour hackathon that brings together the top fintech developers in New York to supercharge financial services at Barclays brand new Accelerator and Innovation Hub, Rise New York. Your challenge – create the future of banking, now.
You may choose one of two factions. Join the elite Super Heroes or Master Hackers. Your team will then be able to compete on one of three worlds for massive prizes. Each world will have one Champion.
These Champions will then be stripped of their powers as the Judges decide their fate. Only one team will be given the honor to serve and protect New York City. They will hold this position until a new war breaks out, where you will have to defend your title.

World 1: Land of Lost Identity

This world has lost its way. Its people do not have traditional sources of identification and are excluded from financial services. They are deemed by their society to be the ‘unbanked clan’.

  • How can you use data to identify the people of this lost world?
  • How can you help consumers gain more access to their own data that may be held in closed/proprietary sources?
  • How can you help them to be financially included?
  • How would you go and create one digital identity?
  • How would you ensure that data is held safely and securely?
  • How do you improve the customer journey for members of this world with accessibility needs?

It is your mission to develop the digital identity of the future.

World 2: Gamers Paradise

It is the year 2100. You have been transported to the future and the world of online rewards, gifts and loyalty is in trouble. Consumers are alienated.
Redeeming rewards is complex and time-consuming.

  • What does the future experience of online rewards look like?
  • How could you bring value and relevance back to online rewards?
  • How could you radically improve redemption?
  • How could you simplify the sign-up process?

It is your mission to simplify and gamify online rewards.

World 3: The Battle for Blockchain

The war for contract simplicity has lasted many years with no one side gaining the upper hand. Time is wasted on emails and phone calls to agree legal terms. There is no audit trail.

  • How could you create a smart contract that gives a clear audit trail using the Blockchain?
  • How could you create a streamlined process which gives both parties the option to review and amend terms in real time?
  • How could you execute a smart contract that takes into account exceptions or unique terms in pricing?

It is your mission is to create a smart contract solution using the Blockchain.

  1. Fresh Code Rule: All code developed as part of the Super Heroes vs Master Hackers hackathon must be fresh. Before the start of the hackathon, developers can create wireframes, designs and user flows. They can also come with hardware. But to keep things fair, all code must be written onsite at Super Heroes vs Master Hackers. Other than that, almost anything goes and you can use any coding languages or open-source libraries.
  2. The IP: Participants own the rights to the projects they create at the hackathon. (Exceptions for Barclays Employees apply, as set for in the Participation Agreement)
  3. The Participation Agreement: Yes, all participants are required to sign this * in advance of or upon arrival at Super Heros vs Master Hackers.
  4. Code Review: Winning teams will be subject to a code-review at some point following the event or immediately before winning.
  5. Team Size: Teams of up to 5 humans are allowed. You can also add 1 cyborg, Furby, drone, or Sphero.
  6. Submissions: Each hackathon has it’s individual page, which projects should be submitted on. Submission time is normally 1pm Sunday unless stated otherwise.
  7. DEMO your hack: You must demo your hack in order to present. No slide-decks or power-points will be allowed. Don’t be scared if you didn’t finish… it’s okay long as you tried your best.

Winners of Super Heroes vs Master Hackers will be selected by a panel of judges that includes industry leaders as well as representatives from each partnering company.

Each submission will be scored in each round based on the following criteria with a minimum score of 0 and maximum score of 25 points, with the final score being the average of the judges’ scores:

  • Kapow! – Does this solution pack a punch and make an impact on the bank’s business case and problem statement?
  • Oh Bam! – How sexy is the customer journey from a UI/UX perspective?
  • Tech PowWow – How impressive was the technology that was used?
  • The ‘Wham’ Factor – How creative was the solution in solving the problem at hand?
  • Zooom! – How quickly could the bank implement this solution?
